How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID how to open audi car key but with no luck. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. 3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so lost audi keys you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a typical part that is found across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
